Peter Pan / Berlin

Robert Wilson's Peter Pan is a musical tale for adults, where humor is mixed with fear. The text is based on Erich Kästner’s German version of J. M. Barrie’s story, in which Peter Pan appears more like a David Bowie type than like a chubby little boy. Featuring original songs and music by the Brooklyn-and-Paris-based "freak folk" band CocoRosie, this production has been playing successfully in the Berliner Ensemble's repertoire, as well as on several international tours.

Letter to a Man / Paris

Mikhail Baryshnikov and Robert Wilson first worked together on The Old Woman, a theater piece based on the writings of absurdist Russian author Daniil Kharms. Baryshnikov co-starred with Willem Dafoe. For the 2015 Spoleto Festival, Wilson created Letter to a Man, a solo piece for Baryshnikov, using the diary of the iconic dancer Vaslav Nijinsky. The diary, which in part documents Nijinsky's descent into madness, was first published in 1936.

Henry Miller wrote about it: "It is a communication so naked, so desperate, that it breaks the mold. We are face to face with reality, and it is almost unbearable...had he not gone to the asylum we would have had in Nijinsky a writer equal to the dancer."

Pushkin's Fairy Tales / Moscow

Pushkin wrote the Fairy Tales at his country home Boldino between 1830 and 1834. The tales' sources vary from Russian folklore themes to Western tales. Written in verse, a humourous narrator alternates with dialogue of the characters. Rich symbolism and enigmatic structures ('Tale of the Golden Cockerel,' 'Tale of the Priest and his workman Balda') and powerful imagery ('Tale of the Fisherman,' 'Tale of Tsar Saltan') are central characteristics of these late works by the great Russian poet. Robert Wilson’s production of Pushkin's Fairy Tales unites four of the five tales in addition to the rather unknown fragment of the 'Tale of the She-Bear.'

Endgame / Berlin

Like in most of Samuel Beckett’s texts, Endgame deals with characters outside of society, waiting and looking in vain for something unknown in a nondescript, apocalyptical place. Its characters are bound towards each other by an invisible chain of co-dependency that knows no way out. Contrary to this bleak topic, it is a strikingly funny play with a number of comic elements, physical and verbal.

After having worked at the Berliner Ensemble since 1998, Endgame is Robert Wilson's 10th production at this theater which was originally founded by Bertolt Brecht.

This poignancy and consequence. This concentration. This severity. This humor. ... No sentimentality, but the echo of a world in turmoil.

Faust I & II / Berlin

The German classic, Faust Part I and II by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, was Robert Wilson's second major collaboration on the stage with German rock star Herbert Grönemeyer after Leonce and Lena in 2003. Wilson and Grönemeyer chose an ensemble of 19 young actors and 8 live musicians, with the quirky Christopher Nell as Mephisto and the voices of Stefan Kurt and Angela Winkler as Earth Ghost and Homunculus.

Robert Wilson’s brilliant Faust fantasy is most entertainingly exciting and, despite all classical depth, pure agravic happiness.
